Sonic Acts

Ecoes, a periodic magazine published by Sonic Acts Press, is a portmanteau of the words ‘ecology’ and ‘echoes’. Focusing on ‘art in the age of pollution’, Ecoes centres loosely around alternatives to the anthropocentric view of Earth and the nonhuman as endless resources. It expands Sonic Acts’ focus on compelling artistic and critical perspectives, reflecting on the rapidly changing world around us. Malleable in form and size, the magazine aims to be a site for experimentation, research, and emerging knowledge-making processes.

A Divine Undoing: An Interview with Elvia Wilk

An uneasy atmosphere pervades Elvia Wilk's writing: a feeling that there is something terribly, irreparably wrong. Published in 2022, her collection of essays Death by Landscape grapples with the enormity of the environmental cataclysm and the inadequacy of human comprehension to reckon with it. The book is not a manifesto, but through the assembled texts, an imperative arises: Amidst the climate emergency, can we begin to recognise ourselves as deeply, sensorially interconnected with the world and its ecosystems? In conversation with Hannah Pezzack, the author delves into a vast and varied array of subjects, including medieval mysticism, chronic illness, science fiction, and toxic algae blooms in upstate New York.

Watery Erotics, Liquidity and Oceanic Thinking: An Interveiw with Stefanie Hessler

Water flows through Stefanie Hessler’s practice. In her work, which encompasses large-scale curatorial, pedagogical and publishing projects, she attends to multi-layered, many meanings of the ocean as geographic location, imaginary landscape, element, body, archive, resource, transport surface and battleground. Drifting through these nuances, attending to flux and flow, ebb and oscillation, this interview centres on three texts authored and edited by Hessler – Tidalectics (2018), Prospecting Ocean (2019) and Sex Ecologies (2021), all published by the MIT Press alongside exhibitions of the same titles.
